Reading indicators

A technical indicator is a calculation made on past prices, which summarizes in one curve what the chart already shows. This section explains what each family of indicators measures — never what should be done upon seeing it.

It starts with trend and moving averages, the simplest family, then momentum, with the RSI and the MACD, which measure the speed of a move rather than its direction. It goes on with volatility and Bollinger Bands, which measure the size of swings, and ends with volume, which looks not at the price but at the quantity traded.
